PUDUCHERRY: Sowmiya loves to draw houses and birds. Her drawing of a bird has now turned into a greeting card for the festive season.

Every year, the special children of Baby Sarah’s Home for Mentally Challenged and Orphan Children design greeting cards for Deepavali and New Year. This year, a drawing of Sowmiya, a special child has been printed on the greeting card for Deepavali.

“There are 80 special children at the home, of which 45 are mentally retarded. We ask them to draw and paint and select the best one for printing on the greeting card. We have been coming up with greeting cards for the last six years,” Secretary of the Home G. Karthikeyan said.

Last Deepavali, a drawing depicting a Bharathanatyam dancer was printed, he said, adding. “For this festive season, we have printed around 1,500 greeting cards. The cards are primarily distributed to the donors of the home. A few industries have approached us for the cards.”

Ask Sowmiya about her love for drawing and she says, “I like to draw houses and birds,” and points out to another drawing of hers - a neatly sketched elephant on her notebook. The special children had come up with different kinds of drawings in their notebooks for the purpose.

“We have been providing special education to the children in the morning and then train them in drawing and handicrafts in the afternoon. We will provide proper training for the children in painting as industries have shown interest for the greeting cards,” Mr. Karthikeyan said.
