State is expecting a bumper crop this year MOGA: Various government agencies and private traders have procured 85.74 lakh metric tonnes of paddy so far out of a total arrival of 87.34 lakh tonnes. This was announced here on Friday by the chairman of the Punjab Mandi Board, Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, who along with other senior officials of procurement agencies and Mandi Board officials visited mandis and purchase centres in the district. In the corresponding period of last year, government agencies and private millers had procured 101 lakh tonnes of paddy out of a total arrival of 101.68 lakh tonnes. He also said that out of total purchases the government agencies procured 70.24 lakh tonnes whereas millers procured 15.50 lakh onnes of paddy. “Punjab,” he said, “expects a bumper crop this year in view of a better paddy yield of 28 quintal per acre as compared to 25 quintals per acre last year.” He claimed that at the request of the Board and the Punajb Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the Cotton Corporation of India will enter all the 32 cotton markets from Saturday. He also assured the Punjab farmers that they would get the minimum support price of Rs.2,800 per quintal of cotton. -- PTI
