DELICIOUS: For Deepavali, sweets made at home seem to have become more popular in Puducherry. PUDUCHERRY: From cooking for marriages, birthdays and special occasions, a number of catering service agents in Puducherry have turned towards sweets this ‘Deepavali.’ Offering “tailor-made” packages for customers and making sweets mostly from homes and marriage halls, the catering agents have started to gain popularity this season. With Deepavali round the corner, there is a good demand for sweets and savouries. A number of catering agencies have booked marriage halls to put up stalls. Kannan and Raja have been making sweets at home for a long time now. “There is no name board outside our house but we have regular customers for the last 25 years. We prepare sweets along with our team members. We started the works for Deepavali from October 15,” said Kannan. The sale of sweets till date was almost three-times more than last season. “We make sweets according to needs of the customers. Some ask for less sugar content and some are particular about the size, taste and colour of the sweets,” he said. For this Deepavali, a list of special sweets includes ‘cashew science,’ ‘cashew raspberry and the regular ones such as laddoo, jangerry, mysurpa, ghee mysurpa, chocolate burfi, badhusha, milk sweets and cashew cake. “Mostly, people ask for regular sweets such as laddoo and badhusha. We prepare the sweets in front of the customers and so they are happy. Our prices are reasonable too,” he said. For V. Sivakami, who runs a catering service, booking a marriage hall every Deepavali for the last 10 years was a regular work. “We have been putting up regular sweet and savouries stalls at marriage halls every festive season. The rest of the year, we carry out our catering services,” she said. With around 15 persons, the catering service offers a variety of sweets and savouries including milk sweets and butter cakes. “We started the stall on October 20 and it will be open till Sunday. We have regular customers and offer the sweets at a cheaper rate than sweet shops,” Ms. Sivakami said.
