CHECKING: T.V. Somanathan, Secretary to Chief Minister (Monitoring), inspecting a work on laying of road near Aranthangi on Saturday. PUDUKOTTAI: A sum of Rs.3.62 crore has been disbursed under the ‘Agricultural Labourers Social Security and Welfare Scheme’ in the district for eight months till August this year, the Secretary to Chief Minister (Monitoring) T. V. Somanathan, said. Presiding over an official meeting to review the on-going works being implemented in the district here on Saturday, Mr. Somanathan said that as many as 3,458 agricultural labourers had benefited under the scheme. He said that a proposal for Rs.54 lakh to benefit another 600 persons who had sought assistance in September had been sent to the state government. Mr. Somanathan fixed a deadline for the implementation of various schemes. He directed the officials to take immediate action to issue community certificates to the students of SSLC and Plus Two courses on or before November 8. Works pending on repairing the panchayat union primary schools should be completed within three weeks. Similarly, the work on the construction of Taluk Office in Iluppur and also all the 14 pending works on laying of roads by the State Highways Department should be completed by the end of November, he said. The new ‘Farmers Shandy’ at Gandaravakottai would be opened by Pongal festival next year. More veterinary health camps would be conducted by the Animal Husbandry Department. On the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Mr. Somanathan said that a total of 523 works had been selected for the current fiscal. As many as 2.43 lakh families had registered their names and 1.30 lakh bank accounts had been opened. Later, Mr. Somanathan inspected the progress of various projects being implemented in the district. He inspected the road works on the Aranthangi – Meemisal; Aranthangi – Kattumavadi and Arannthangi – Pattukottai sectors. At the sub-station in SIPCOT complex, he enquired the distribution of power to the consumers. He also ascertained the quality of eggs being supplied at the Municipal Middle School at Tirugokarnam in the town and verified the land pattas distributed under the ‘Free Two Acre’ scheme at Nemmelikadu village near here. At Puduvakottai village in the Pambar sub-basin, the Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar explained to Mr. Somanathan the achievement under the ‘System of Rice Intensification’ and also the progress of a work on modernisation of the Panchathi anicut being implemented under the ‘Irrigated Agriculture Modernisation and Water Resources Management’ project at an outlay of Rs.1.23 crores. The District Revenue Officer, Chief Minister’s Monitoring Cell, V. Rajaraman was among those who were present.
