Man gets 30-year jail term for looting bus passengers
Rajkot: A local court here sentenced a man to 30 years rigorous imprisonment in as many as nine cases of looting passengers, prosecution sources said.
The accused Nitin Rameshchandra Bhatt was on Friday awarded 30 years rigorous imprisonment in nine different cases. Fifteen years rigorous imprisonment in three cases, nine years on three other cases and six years for another three cases, public prosecution Girish Bhatt said, adding the sentences will not run concurrently.
Nitin, a computer engineer and native of Surat city, used to rob passengers travelling by State Transport buses.
He used to get familiar with passengers and offered them sedatives added to tea. As they became unconscious, he left the bus with the looted valuables, police said.
The accused was arrested some ten months back from Rajkot Central bus depot, while he was moving in a suspicious manner, police said, adding that some mobile phones, Sim cards, ATM cards and medicines used to mix in the tea, were recovered from him.
Interestingly, the accused did not engage any lawyer and fought his case on his own. -- PTI
