Joint prohibition raids planned in border areas

Staff Reporter

22 persons detained under Goondas Act

KRISHNAGIRI: In view of Deepavali festival, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri district police will hold joint prohibition raids in border police stations on Sunday and Monday, said Anisha Hussein, Superintendent of Police, Krishnagiri district, here on Saturday.

The hooch trade has been completely eradicated in Krishnagiri district because of the cooperation of the Village Vigilance Committee members and the the Friends of Police in rural and remote areas. Ms. Hussein said so far 22 persons, including a notorious rowdy, had been detained under the Goondas Act. In view of increasing road accidents, policemen had been asked to check drunken-driving. Highway patrol police will be deployed to identify speeding vehicles.

There are six police stations in the district bordering Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The strength of policemen in these stations will be increased to check illegal transport of arrack and ration rice. Six yellow brigades had been pressed into service in Hosur to prevent chain-snatching and robbery.

The Krishnagiri district with a population of around 15 lakh has only 800 policemen. This is not enough to control crime and maintain law and order, the SP said.
