Rally seeks total ban on bauxite mining in Maliparvat area

KORAPUT: Maliparvat Surakhya Samiti of K. Maliguda in Semiliguda block of Korsput district took out a massive rally at Semiliguda on Saturday demanding a total ban on mining of bauxite in Maliparvat region.

In a memorandum addressed to the Governor, the Samiti demanded total ban on the mining operation with immediate effect. The project would not be beneficial in anyway for the people of the region. Rather thousands of tribals belonging to 22 villages would lose the mountains which had facilitated their livelihood solutions by providing fire wood, medicinal plants and at least 60 spring based water sources, Damburu Khilo, president of the Samiti, said. The Samiti would go for wider agitation if the mining was not stopped by the government, he added.
