RAMANATHAPURAM: Tamil film directors Ameer Sultan (42), son of Mohamed Ismail, and Seeman (42) son of Sebastian, who were arrested on sedition and other charges, have been remanded to 15 days’ judicial custody. The Judicial Magistrate-I, P. Thangavelu, who is also in-charge of the Rameswaram Judicial Magistrate court, directed the police to produce them on November 7. He also directed that they be lodged at Madurai Central Prisons. M. Ramasamy, K. Gunasekaran, A.R. Nambunayagam, advocates who represented Ameer and Seeman, moved a bail petition and demanded that they be released immediately. They argued that the “Q” Branch CID had not produced any material or documentary evidence in support of the charges. The First Information Report and remand report could be taken as base for sending them for judicial custody. However, the Judicial Magistrate rejected the bail petition. A separate petition was filed before the magistrate demanding first class facilities for them during judicial custody, stating that both were income tax assesses and enjoyed high respect in the society. The magistrate asked whether they had any evidence to prove their claim. Following this, Seeman and Ameer produced the photocopies of income tax related documents, which were received by them through fax immediately. High drama prevailed in the Ramanathapuram court complex when they were brought by the police from Chennai. A sizeable number of cadres of various organisations and political parties shouted slogans in support of them and raised pro-LTTE slogans also. The relatives of Ameer and Seeman were present at the court hall. In a brief chat with reporters, the two directors said they spoke only in support of the Tamils and had no regrets about it. The atrocities against Tamils by Sri Lankan forces were condemnable.
