A ‘cine documentary’ captures moments of the eminent musician’s life

KANNUR: A documentary on late singer and musician M.S. Baburaj was screened here on Sunday. The documentary titled ‘Pattupetti’ directed by N.M. Babu, a lecturer in the Government Brennen College at Thalassery, features the life of Baburaj who rendered music to many evergreen Malayalam film songs.

Contrasts

The ‘cine documentary,’ as its makers call it, captures the life of the musician who had lived a bohemian life at the pinnacle of his fame and died almost an impoverished man.

The documentary is presented through the perspective of a young man called Gouthaman who is in a quest to identify the spirit of Baburaj’s music that is relevant in contemporary life. Gouthaman’s quest turns out to be a return to a nostalgic past.

The documentary also contains interviews of personalities such as writers M.T. Vasudevan Nair, U.A. Khader, poets O.N.V. Kurup and Sreekumaran Thampi, singer K.P. Udayabhanu and film actor Mamu Koya.

They share their experiences with the maestro and recount how his contribution had influenced them.

Pramod Narath dons the role of Baburaj in the documentary produced by Kannur Pentagon Cine Creations. The script of the documentary has been written by Thomas Devassya. J.P. Nambyalath has done the cinematography.
