‘Local artistes will also be given importance’

The festival begins: G. Janardhan Reddy, Minister for Tourism (centre), releasing invitations for Hampi Utsav in Bellary on Sunday.

BELLARY: G. Janardhan Reddy, Minister for Tourism and Chairman of the High-power committee for Hampi Utsav-2008, has said that efforts are being made to ensure that the festival helps visitors live the Vijayanagar experience. He released the invitation of the three-day cultural extravaganza here on Sunday.

This is for the first time that the invitations are being released in Bellary and made available to the people at least a week before the fest is held. Hitherto, invitations used to reach Bellary only two days prior to the event, resulting in art-lovers and the people not coming to know of the performances.

Renowned artistes such as Asha Bhonsle, Pankaj Udhas, Sonu Nigam, Hamsalekha, Vinayak Torvi, M. Venkatesh Kumar, Shovana Narayan (Kathak), Shobha Naidu and Swapna Sundari (dancers), B.K. Sumitra and troupe and B.R. Chaya and troupe would perform.

He said importance had also been given to well-known artistes from the district such as Subhadramma Mansur, Vijaya Kishore and Rajalakshmi. Cultural troupes from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Tanzania, Indonesia and also from various cultural zones in the country would stage shows.

As usual, the light and sound show would be held at the elephant stables, in which ‘Karnataka Vaibhava’ would be presented. B. Shivappa, Deputy Commissioner; G.N. Shivamurthy, headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner; Chornur Kotrappa, Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture and Ranganath of the Information Department were present.
