Vayalar award presented to Veerendrakumar

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vayalar Ramavarma Literary Award was presented to M.P. Veerendrakumar here on Monday. Vayalar Ramavarma Trust president M.K. Sanoo presented the award, which carries a purse of Rs.25,000, a statuette designed by Kanayi Kunhiraman and citation, at the Tagore Centenary Hall here. Mr. Veerendrakumar was chosen for the award for his book ‘Haimavathabhoovil.’

Presenting the award, Prof. Sanoo described Mr. Veerendrakumar’s work as a pilgrimage into the soul of India. The book has been written with a perspective on Indian cultural heritage that is similar to the one that Vayalar Ramavarma held close to his heart. Giving his introductory remarks, poet O.N.V. Kurup said that though ‘Haimavathabhoovil’ is a travelogue in a technical sense, it is also a serious exploration into Indian culture and heritage. Describing ‘Haimavathabhoovil’ as a blessing for the language, award committee member C. Radhakrishnan said Mr. Veerendrakumar’s book is proof for his multi-dimensional capabilities.

Accepting the award, Mr. Veerendrakumar said that more than anything else it is the cultural bonding that keeps the nation together. Nature is being torn asunder by human greed and selfishness. In writing ‘Haimavathabhoovil,’ his attempt was to see how divergent cultures, languages and customs keep the Indian nation together, Mr. Veerendrakumar said.
