Call for change in mode of rail reservation

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has called for changes in rail reservation system. In a statement, the party said that the common man suffered while reserving train tickets during this festival season. The issue was discussed at the party’s executive committee meeting of the district unit here recently.

P. Mohan, MP, presided over the meeting. N. Varadarajan, State secretary, P. Sampath, member, State executive committee, N. Nanmaran, MLA, and R. Annadurai, district secretary, participated.

Fake names

The statement said that it was found that tickets were booked largely through Internet and travel agencies using fake names and this resulted in a large number of people not getting reserved tickets. The party urged the Railway Ministry to limit the number of seats for online booking to 144, with two compartments.

Tatkal coaches

Earlier, the statement pointed out, only one compartment was earmarked for booking under tatkal scheme charging Rs. 50 extra. But now four compartments, with an additional charge of Rs.150, had been provided for tatkal booking, which made things difficult for the common man.

It also called for a reduction in number of compartments earmarked for talkal booking from four to two.
