CPI leaders divided

Some prefer to ally with TDP while others opt for PR

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India appears to be in a dilemma over the alliances it should forge in the next elections in the State as the party leadership is learnt to be divided over the issue.

While majority of the leaders are in favour of joining forces with the Telugu Desam owing to its strong organisational base at the grassroots level, a section of them feel that aligning with Praja Rajyam of film star Chiranjeevi would augur well as it was a ‘new outfit without any branding’.

The leaders presented their views at the crucial two-day CPI State executive meeting that got under way here on Wednesday.

Final decision

CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan, deputy general secretary S. Sudhakar Reddy and national secretariat member D. Raja were present at the meeting. Mr. Bardhan is understood to have assured that the issue would be discussed at the party’s national executive likely to commence on November 1 and a final decision taken based on the national perspective.

“The party will take a final decision after consulting the CPI(M) and eliciting their views on alliances,” a senior leader said. Meanwhile, the CPI State executive has demanded that the government order an inquiry by a sitting High Court judge into the charges levelled against Panchayat Raj Minister J.C. Diwakar Reddy by his colleague G. Surya Rao. The CPI wanted Mr. Diwakar Reddy to be removed from his portfolio to facilitate an impartial probe into the charges of misappropriating .

The party termed as ridiculous the efforts of Finance Minister K. Rosaiah to brush aside the issue as an internal matter of the Congress.
