Disaster management preparedness reviewed

Coimbatore: District Collector V. Palanikumar recently reviewed the preparedness of the official machinery for handling disaster situations and preparedness for mitigation efforts.

Mr. Palanikumar told the heads of various departments to prepare a list of men and machinery available at the disposal of every department, list of medical experts their contact numbers, medicines besides a list of logistics and infrastructures available with the local bodies. Such a list should be made readily available with the district administration, he said.

A concerted and co-ordinated effort on the part of all Government departments was paramount for mitigating the sufferings of the people in the event of a natural calamity or a disaster such as earth quake. To reduce the impact and gravity of such disasters, efforts should be made to ensure that future constructions were earthquake resistant structures by soliciting the support and co-operation of civil engineering experts.

He also exhorted telecommunication, transport, traffic management, police, fire and rescue services, health department officials to keep their machinery and manpower in a state of readiness and finetuned. The meeting was attended by District Revenue Officer S. Prabhakaran, Superintendent of Police, G. Karthikeyan, Dean of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, V. Kumaran and other officials of various other departments.
