Coimbatore breathes easy as dams fill up

K.V. Prasad

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation sounded relieved on Wednesday as the water level in the Siruvani Dam was just inches below the full reservoir level.

Besides, there is such heavy flow in the Pilloor Dam that 15,000 cusecs were being released from it into River Bhavani. Both schemes provide 140 million litres of drinking water to the city and around 80 mld to the local bodies in the suburbs.

Continuous rain till Sunday night raised the level to 66.62 ft on Monday, as against the full reservoir level of 67.44 ft.

The overflow expected on Tuesday or Wednesday did not happen as the rain stopped. But, inflow through water falls helped maintain Monday’s level even on Wednesday. And, the Corporation feels that even a near full Siruvani Dam itself offers hopes of managing water supply in the coming summer.

“We will be able to continue with the present alternate day supply of drinking water across the city till March with whatever is available now in both the dams, especially Siruvani,” Mayor R. Venkatachalam said on Wednesday.

More rain is expected and water may overflow. But, the present situation also is very comforting, after a wait that has been excruciatingly longer than last year for the dam to fill up.
