TIRUNELVELI: For the farmers of Thidiyoor near Palayamkottai, Deepavali this year would last long in their memory as they were able to get a premium price for their produce, brinjal. Farmers of this village prefer the cultivation of newly introduced high yielding brinjal variety, Killikulam – 1 (KKM – 1), to the traditional local variety as they are quite satisfied with its yield, high keeping quality and the premium price they are getting for this variety in Tirunelveli market. As the Department of Horticulture decided to promote area specific crops in the district depending upon the agro-climatic conditions prevailing in each block, high yielding KKM – 1 was introduced in Thidiyoor, a traditional brinjal-growing village. Deputy Director of Horticulture, Tirunelveli T.V. Katchi Jamal said the brinjal seeds were procured from Agricultural College and Research Institute, Killikulam and disbursed to 30 farmers at 50 per cent subsidised cost so as to promote the high yielding variety under Integrated Horticulture Development Scheme through village level vegetable seed distribution campaigns during June this year. Subsequently, periodic village meetings and field to field demonstrations were conducted on the cultivation, plant protection technologies by the extension officers of the department, he added. A team, led by M. Ramachandran, Assistant Director of Horticulture, Palayamkottai, distributed Farmers ID cards to the willing farmers so that they could sell their produce in the upcoming ‘Uzhavar Sandhai’ at Melapalayam. S. Raja Mohamed, Horticultural Officer, Palayamkottai and M. Asan Peer Mohamed, Assistant Agricultural Officer said the high-yielding KKM-1 brinjal variety had ensured a profit of Rs.30,000 from 40 cents. Though this block experienced incessant rains, the quality of the brinjal was good, feel the farmers, who supply a minimum of four mini truck load to the Tirunelveli market. The Munneerpallam Village Administrative Officer Ramasubramaniam has given indent for the next season after their paddy harvest. R. Sudalaimuthu of Thidiyoor, who has cultivated KKM-1 brinjal on 40 cents, said he could harvest 250 kg a week and get Rs.37,500 while R. Ponnapaan, growing this variety on 70 cents, said he had so far harvested 2,000 kg in 5 pickings and sold at the rate of Rs.1,200 a bag of 50 kg.
