Jayalalithaa moves court for enhanced security
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Thursday sought enhanced security for her in the wake of a letter, allegedly written by a Sri Lankan Tamils’ organisation, threatening her with grave consequences if she interfered in the “Tamil Eelam LTTE issue.”
Counsel for Ms. Jayalalithaa had on Wednesday mentioned to Justice M.Jaichandren of the Madras High Court about the threat received by the AIADMK general secretary. Mr. Justice Jaichandren had permitted counsel to move the court on Thursday.
In June this year, the Judge had directed official authorities to depute a police officer not below the rank of a Superintendent of Police to meet Ms. Jayalalithaa at her residence, gather information on the threat perception and assess security arrangements provided to her.
In the memorandum filed by counsel A. Navaneethakrishnan, she stated that as directed by the court, A.T. Durai Kumar, Superintendent of Police-II, Security Branch CID, met her at her residence here on August 20. A letter detailing the security measures needed to be taken was handed over to the police officer.
It was not known whether any report had been presented by the Superintendent of Police to the Security Review Committee. Further, it was not known if the report was placed before the committee and what action was taken, she said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa said the letter contained a serious threat to her life. The present security arrangements were “absolutely inadequate” considering the threat she was facing.
Mr. Navaneethakrishnan, submitted that the matter was serious. Considering the threat Ms. Jayalalithaa faced, commandos should be deployed. Advocate-General G. Masilamani submitted that sufficient security had been provided to Ms. Jayalalithaa. The government would do whatever was necessary with regard to her security. As on date, the earlier case had been disposed of. The order of court had been fully complied with. There was no complaint that the earlier order had not been complied with.
Ms. Jayalalithaa’s counsel said the proceedings relating to the security review committee should be called for.
The Judge posted the matter for November 5 for the government to report on it.
