Discussion on 24-hour water supply in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: Fichtner Consulting Engineers India Private Limited officials on Friday conducted an interaction with stakeholders, elected representatives and officials of Coimbatore Corporation soliciting public opinion on implementing 24 x 7 water supply modules in two demonstration areas.

Chairmen of zones, standing committees, councillors, Mayor R. Venkatachalam, Commissioner in-charge V. Shantha and other officials in charge of water supply attended the interaction.

Fichtner Consulting Engineers India Private Limited would embark on the work for preparing a detailed project report taking into account the deliberations in the meeting held on Friday.

The interaction had briefings by officials from Fichtner namely S. Ramakrishnan, Former Engineering Director of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, T.A. Natarajan, Former Engineer of Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (Pilloor Tunnel) scheme, M. Dhanapalan, Former Chief Engineer of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD Board).

Fichtner has experience of implementing such infrastructure projects in local bodies such as Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum and Gulbarga in Karnataka.

Coimbatore City Corporation had 105.6 sq km area with five distribution areas spread over 72 wards serving a population of 11 lakhs. The Corporation had 43 overhead reservoirs for 1.06 lakh water supply connections served by 640-km-long pipelines.

At present, water was being supplied for two to three hours a day once in two or three days at the rate of 125 litre a person.

Fichtner will implement the 24 x 7 module in two demonstration areas i.e., Race Course, Ram Nagar and Gandhinagar and in the second area the module would be implemented in Peelamedupudur, Sowripalayam, Masakkalipalayam, Neelikonampalayam and Ondipudur.

The city had a population of 9.3 lakh as per 2001 as per census.

According to a Fichter projection, in 2021 the population was estimated to be around 12.88 lakhs and by 2036 the population would be 16.44 lakhs.

Per capita requirement of water a day would rise to 135 litres.

The city would require 210 million litres by 2021 and 272 million litre by 2036.

At present, the city gets 75 million litres from Siruvani and 62 million litres from Pilloor scheme.

When the second phase of the Pilloor water supply scheme comes into operation, it would provide 125 million litres.

Elected representatives raised various questions regarding operational details and doubts raised by the officials were also answered by the Fichtner representatives.
