Kameshwaram to become model village in district

NAGAPATTINAM: The district administration was planning to develop Kameshwaram as a model village in the district, and would set aside adequate funds to develop it in all respects, Collector M. Jayaraman said recently.
Speaking at the opening of a community centre in the village, built by the NGO People’s Development Agency (PDA) at a cost of Rs. 18.5 lakh, the Collector said that the village had seen investments by various agencies due to the positive attitude of the people.
In spite of being ravaged by the tsunami, the people had behaved with self-confidence and dignity in rebuilding their habitations. He said that they should continue to use the various facilities for their own development and prove a model for others in the district.
Mr. Jayaraman noted that the village had already won the Nirmal Gram Puraskar for exceptional performance in sanitation and other facilities. He asked the people to utilise government subsidies to ensure that 100 per cent sanitation was provided soon.
Joe Velu of PDA said that the community centre was special as the funds for building it had been generated by workers in Italy through the organisation ISCOS. C.G. Kanagasundaram, president, village panchayat, thanked the Collector and NGOs for their active support and asked them to continue their support by providing livelihood opportunities in the village.
