CHECKING OUT: Collector R. Sudalaikannan, left, at a review meeting with bank officials in Ariyalur on Thursday. ARIYALUR: The district administration has appealed for social commitment of bankers towards students seeking educational loans. At a review meeting of Bankers’ Standing Committee on Thursday, Collector R. Sudalaikannan wondered why some banks had failed to act on petitions for educational loans forwarded by the district administration. There was no reason why eligible candidates should not be sanctioned loans promptly. In case of ineligibility, the reason should be explained well to the applicant, he emphasised, and advised the officials of Lead Bank – State Bank of India – to furnish information on education loans forwarded by various banks branch-wise on a monthly basis. Equipment subsidyHe sought the active cooperation of officials of Agricultural Engineering department and bankers for passing on to farmers the benefit of 50 per cent government subsidy on purchase of equipment for drip irrigation and sprinkler system. He requested banks to promptly furnish particulars pertaining to the acreage and premium due from farmers who have availed themselves of the Paddy Insurance Scheme to the Agriculture Insurance Company Ltd. He expressed disappointment over the failure of some banks to provide identity cards to beneficiaries of National Rural Employment Guarantee Project. The process for which the deadline given by the Central Government has already ended should at least be completed by November 10, he insisted. Even in the case of women self-help groups, several groups with a rating of high credit worthiness were yet to be provided with loans for economic activities, he said. There were 93,944 members belonging to 5,871 SHGs to whom banks had provided loans to the tune of Rs. 30.26 crore in the district. Revolving fund amounting to Rs. 14.78 crore had been given to 2,475 SHGs, and for economic activities, a sum of Rs. 19.63 crore had been sanctioned for 298 SHGs. The district administration expected banks to accord priority for sanctioning loans to the SHGs recommended by the officials of Mahalir Thittam, he said. ReprimandedHe reprimanded the branches of nationalised banks that were yet to act on applications recommended by officials of Thadco for sanction of subsidy-linked loans since 2005. The progress in this case would be scrutinised at the next meeting, he said, stressing that the banks must prioritise applications for loans from conservancy workers who wish to change their vocation, under the Thadco schemes for economic uplift. The Collector wanted all the banks to send periodical reports to the Lead Bank on the developments they make on the above mentioned issues. Mahalir Thittam Project Officer A. Pandian; Lead Bank Managers S.V. Shankar and K. Nagarajan, Assistant Manager K. Kothandan, SBI Ariyalur Branch Manager G. Nagalingam, and officials of various other banks took part in the meeting.
