Help desk sought for NRIs in Gulf

HYDERABAD: A group of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday appealed to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to set up a help desk in Dubai with Hyderabad as the point of contact to assist immigrants from the State in the gulf.
The group also wanted extension of Arogyasri scheme to the needy NRIs in the Gulf. Dr. Reddy was positive towards the demands and ordered that they be discussed at a meeting with the Minority Welfare Minister Mohammed Ali Shabbir within a week, the group president Katta Prasad said.
Mr. Prasad told a press conference that the group wanted the government to create awareness among prospective immigrants about the likely hazards in the Gulf before they left the State. The government should create a support system to families of immigrants who died abroad.
He estimated the number of immigrants from the State who overstayed across the gulf at two to three lakh. The problem was only with this section as it forfeited all benefits offered by the UAE government. Identification of dead bodies was the biggest problem in the case of overstaying people.
