dated November 1, 1958: Rose Macaulay dead

Dame Rose Macaulay, the English novelist and essayist, died at her London home on October 30. She was in her late seventies. Her publications include ‘What Not’ (1919), and ‘Personal Pleasures’ (1935). She was a seasoned critic and wrote books on Milton and E.M. Forster. Among her latest works was ‘The Towers of Tribizond’, published in 1956, for which she was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. She was a prolific writer and was a regular contributor of personal essays, reminiscences and travel jottings to the Spectator and other periodicals.
