Letters to the Editor
The article, “How the men of honour rose to the occasion” (October 31), has genuine relevance and offers light to the vexed issue of the complex hatred that subsists between India and Pakistan. The dynamic conduct displayed by the armed forces of India and Pakistan in rising above differences of religion and ethnicity at the time of Partition was more than commendable. The hatred that still persists is largely due to an innocuous political rivalry that started in 1930s by the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League. A whole generation has fought to strengthen this rivalry and what have they gained except bloodshed? History can teach us proper lessons only if we learn the right history. Sadly, in both countries it is the villainy of the other that is portrayed. Vikram Ramakrishnan, Chennai The article gave me the utmost happiness. Let us follow our conscience which is our teacher, mentor and leader and which shows us the path of enlightenment that helps to uphold the values of democracy.Abdul Muqhtadir, Manvi The article was touching and timely. The British Indian Army (both in India and Pakistan) is indeed a model to armed forces anywhere in the world. Why not make such events part of the curriculum in both military and civilian schools? Congratulations to both The Hindu and the author.N.V. Abdulrahman, Malappuram
