Corrections and Clarifications

>>The byline/name of the Guwahati Special Correspondent Sushanta Talukdar was misspelt as Sushanta Takukdar in the lead story “Terror strikes Assam, 62 killed” (October 31, 2008, page 1).

>>The caption of the accompanying PTI photograph in a report “‘Replicate the success of IT in the power sector’” (“Business” page, October 31, 2008) described Mr. Nandan Nilekani as Chairman, Infosys. It should have been Co-chairman, Infosys, as mentioned in the text.

>>The heading of a PTI report (Delhi, October 30, 2008, page 1) was “Life returns to normal in Valley”, which a reader said was misleading as the text said “Normal life remained paralysed in North Kashmir’s Baramulla as shops and business establishments in the town remained closed for the sixth consecutive day today ….” There was no mention of the situation in the Valley. The unedited report said “… Barring Baramulla and Sopore, life returned to normal across Kashmir valley yesterday ….” (The heading in the earlier editions (North India, October 30, 2008, page 1) was “Life returns to normal in Valley, Baramulla tense”.)

>>A report ‘“Follow different ways to help children with learning disabilities”’ (Tamil Nadu, October 30, 2008) referred to Mr. Andrew T. Simkin, in the text and accompanying photo caption, as the Chief Consul for South India, American Consulate, Chennai. The office of the Consulate General of the United States, Chennai, clarifies that his designation is U.S. Consul General in Chennai.

>>A sentence in the second paragraph of “New approaches to sanitation” (Editorial, October 23, 2008) was “Anticipating a shortfall in state-funding, it understandably stresses pubic-private partnership to augment sanitation efforts.” It should have been “public”.

>>Two sports reports “Ramachandran elected WSF President” (Early editions, October 19, 2008) and “I feel humbled, says Ramachandran” (October 22, 2008) said that N. Ramachandran [Executive Director of India Cements] has become the first Indian to head a World sports body when he was elected President of the World Squash Federation recently. As pointed out by a reader, he is not the first Indian to head a world sports body. (The error was corrected in the later editions.)
