Draft urban development policy to be ready by January: Suresh Kumar

Special Correspondent

Work on preparing the draft reviewed recently

It will be published for public comments

Bangalore: Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs S. Suresh Kumar said on Friday that the draft of the first-ever urban development policy of the State Government would be ready by January. It would be deliberated upon by mayors, experts and administrators who handled civic affairs, before being cleared for approval.

He was speaking after releasing a book “Urban Planning and Development at Crossroads,” authored by M.C.K. Swamy, B. Bhaskar Rao and V.M. Hegde at the School of Management for Infrastructure and Development Strategies (MINDS). Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University H.P. Kincha released a book, “Entrepreneurship and Management”, written by S. Nagendra and V.S. Manjunath. Mr. Suresh Kumar said the work on preparing the draft was reviewed recently. Once the draft was ready, it would be placed before the local bodies and mayors for discussion.

He said that a one-man committee, headed by the former Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board A. Ravindra, was leading the efforts of preparing the draft. It would be published for public comments and suggestions for incorporating them in the policy. Commending the contents of the book on urban development, the Minister said that it might provide some solutions to the chaotic urban conditions prevailing in the State. It was the duty of the government and society to inculcate a civic sense in the minds of the citizens and inject a culture among those who work in civic bodies to maintain and preserve qualities of administration and management, he said and added that otherwise the policy would remain only on paper.

Mr. Ravindra released MATRICS (management, training, infrastructure and consultancy services), a bi-annual magazine, brought out on the occasion.

Later, he chaired a seminar on “growth and development of Bangalore: experiences and expectations”, organised by MINDS.
