It is high time police stepped up patrolling Law & order

L. Srikrishna

The murder of two night watchmen in a private factory situated at Kapalur industrial estate by unidentified persons was a wake up call to the police to step up patrolling.

Though there had been incidents of theft of property and burglary in the industrial estate in the past, the news of the double murder came as a rude shock to many workers and entrepreneurs.

Based on the circumstances that led to the grave crime, it is suspected that the watchmen might have spotted robbers stealing cash from the premises. While fleeing with the booty, the murder could have been committed to ensure that their identity was not revealed to the public.

Investigating officers said that they had lifted a finger print from the scene of crime.

Preliminary inquiries suggested that the murder might have been committed by some persons known to the victims.

A senior officer monitoring the investigations said, “We have some strong clues and hope to solve the case soon.” He refused to elaborate further at this stage. Three teams comprising a Deputy Superintendent of Police and Inspectors are questioning suspects and some workers. Whether there was any previous enmity or any other illegal act that caused the murder was also being examined, he added.

With a majority of the units being sick or shutdown in the estate, the absence of a ‘pucca’ compound wall makes entry easy outsiders and law violators. Absence of streetlights had helped the accused to escape under the cover of darkness in this case. Similarly, the noise pollution caused due to the functioning of generators too was an advantage to the offenders while committing a crime, another police officer said.

A few office-bearers of the Kappalur Industrial Estate Association said that the government should set up a full-fledged police station or at least open a police outpost immediately. Many expensive industrial goods such as copper wire rolls and cables, among other materials, were stolen by unidentified persons in the past.

“The murder of the two watchmen has only vindicated our plea to step up security in the campus,” they said.
