The excercise is aimed at assessing the escort teams’ performance, writes R. Rajaram The Railway Protection Force (RPF) authorities have finalised a mechanism to assess the alertness and performance of their teams providing train escort on board various express and super fast trains originating from Tiruchi as well as those passing through the Tiruchi Division. An RPF officer in the rank of an Inspector will be daily assigned the task of checking the alertness of the teams providing security in as many as 20 long distance trains every day. At present, there are 13 train escort teams in Tiruchi Division comprising 70 RPF personnel. Each team is headed either by an Assistant Sub Inspector or a Sub Inspector. The monitoring officer from a particular post will be given a free hand in choosing the station, train and the time of inspection only beyond his jurisdictional area. The officer would also board en-route in a particular train to check the functioning of the escorting party. The RPF Inspectors had already been given a briefing about the task they would be entrusted with at a crime meeting held at the office of the Divisional Security Commissioner, Tiruchi Division here recently, say the authorities. Barring the Chennai – Kumbakonam – Chennai Rockfort Expresses where the strength of the escort team is seven, it is five or four in respect of other express and super fast trains. The Tiruchi escort teams provide security while the trains pass their limits and hand over the charge either to their Chennai or Madurai counterparts once their jurisdiction ends. Ninety per cent of the trains where the train escort is in vogue are night trains. The monitoring officer will find out whether the personnel of the escort team report well before the arrival of the train; whether they carry the necessary accessories along with them; whether they move on the platform to make their presence felt and whether they keep moving in the coaches allotted to them. Every escort team is given a briefing before they embark on their mission. The team members are equipped with arms, walkie-talkie sets, search lights, FIR forms, a list comprising the telephone numbers of the local police stations, Railway Police stations and those of the RPF posts, and an album containing photographs of rail criminals. The team head will also be equipped with a hand-held metal detector. Every train is divided into three sectors and the escort party members will be given the responsibility of keeping a tab on a set of coaches allotted to them. The monitoring officer will submit the checking report to the Divisional Security Commissioner every day. The exercise is not only aimed at assessing the alertness and performance of the escort teams but also rectify the lacunae, if any, and further improve its working, says the RPF Divisional Security Commissioner, Tiruchi S.R. Gandhi. A team of three RPF Inspectors will be nominated to select the best escort team which will be given cash rewards to encourage them and motivate the others, Mr. Gandhi says.
