Car knocks down boy at Punjagutta

Staff Reporter

3-year-old Akhil dies on the spot

HYDERABAD: The dreams of a poor couple, who came to the city in search of a better life, were shattered when a speeding car crushed their three-year-old son, Akhil, to death at the bustling Punjagutta junction on Friday afternoon.

The couple – T. Laxman Rao and Satyaveeni – hailing from Kakinada got down from a bus at Punjagutta junction and were walking along the road with their son when the car coming from Nagarjuna circle hit the boy. Akhil died on the spot, while his parents escaped unhurt.

Rao’s relatives promised to arrange him a security guard’s job in a newly constructed apartment.

Police registered a case under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC against the car driver, Ramadevi, and took her into custody. She works as a consultant at Punjagutta, police said.

Student killed

In a separate incident, a fifth standard student was killed after a water tanker hit him near his house at old Santoshnagar on Friday.

Ramavath Akshay (11) was trying to draw water along with other residents when the tanker driver took a reverse turn without noticing him. The boy was crushed to death under the rear wheels of the tanker. The driver vanished from the spot after the incident, according to the police.
