Handicrafts expo
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: With the objective of providing a platform for the public to view some quality handicraft items and to promote the artisans, a handicrafts exhibition-cum-sales commenced here on Friday.
Being organised by Integrated Women Development Institute, Chennai, with the support of the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Union Ministry of Textiles, the expo features a wide range of handicrafts.
From embroidery saris, dress materials, vanity bags, seashell products to bamboo products, different products have been made available under one roof.
The exhibition features the creations of more than 20 artisans.
While wood carvings steal the show, handmade chamkis, vanity bags and seashell items also compete to grab the customer’s attention. Pottery items are also present.
Live demonstration of how these products are made is held throughout the day.
It brings out the painstaking hard work that goes into the making of these goods.
The exhibition was inaugurated by A.R. Chaudhuri, Director (Southern Region), Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Union Ministry of Textiles. S. Rajagopal, Managing Director, Small Industries Product Promotion Organisation (SIPPO), A.M. Abdhul Kader, Assistant Director, DCMI, and M. Mahalingam, Assistant Director, DC (H), were present.
The expo is on at Vijay Mahal at K.K. Nagar till November 9. It will remain open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
