Over Rs.1,200 crore spent under NREGS

CHENNAI: A sum of Rs.1,286 crore has been spent so far in the State under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), out of the total outlay of Rs.1,808 crore.
An official release issued on Friday stated that steps were being taken to utilise remaining outlay. Between May 2006 and March 2008, Rs.620 crore was spent. The release stated that when the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime assumed charge in May 2006, only Rs.3 crore had been spent. It accelerated the execution of works under the scheme. Several Central officials, who visited the State and reviewed the progress of the works, had commended the State.
