Four international teams among 63 in NLSIU contest

BANGALORE: The seventh edition of the National Law School Parliamentary Debate competition, organised by the National Law School of India University started here on Thursday. The Hindu is a media partner for the event, which will conclude on Sunday.

With over 62 teams comprising 300 students from elite educational institutions from throughout the country and some parts of Asia, this year’s event is larger than ever before.

With four international teams from Sri Lanka participating in the event, this specialised form of debate — based on the Asians Debating Format — is catching on among the students.

NLSIU Vice-Chancellor A. Jayagovind inaugurated the debate.

“The practice of parliamentary debating should be developed among students. It sharpens one’s analytical skills and reasoning power.”

Sudhir Krishnaswamy, the NLSIU faculty advisor for the literary and debating society, said: “Such debating encourages one to think logically and structure their thoughts in an organised manner. In view of the growing unrest among various sections, healthy parliamentary debating serves as an anecdote to acts of violence used to deal with issues.”

The four international teams from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh arrived here on Wednesday.

Mevan Kiriells Bandara, student of LLB Faculty of Law, University of Colombo, said: “Such debating has helped me in my day-to-day activities to a large extent. I find it easy to organise and structure out my work and go about it logically.”

NLS is among the few institutions that organise this specialised and technical form of debate. Mr. Bandara said that options for such debating were far and few between in his country. “This gives us an opportunity to interact with students of other countries and get a deeper understanding of different systems,” he added.
