BELLARY: The 52nd Rajyotsava Day celebrations here on Saturday, were marked by a puja to the idol of Goddess Bhuvaneshwari, followed by a procession in which artistes representing various folk forms, a traditional band and children from various schools participated. G. Janardhan Reddy, Minister for Tourism, who hoisted the National Flag, said it was a matter of pride that Karnataka was known for its varied culture and also for its religious harmony. He urged the people to continue to uphold the traditional values of the State, which he said had been in force for a long time. Mr. Reddy underlined the need for the youth to strive hard to restore “diminishing” human values, besides developing a sense of patriotism to the country. Welcoming the Centre’s decision to grant Kannada classical language status, he claimed it was the result of efforts put in by the Bharatiya Janata Party Government. He also expressed happiness over three persons from the district — Ravi Belagere, Dr. B.K. Srinivasmurthy and autorickshaw driver P. Vali — being presented with this year’s Rajyotsava Award. Later, he flagged off a procession which went through the main streets of the city before culminating at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Attractive tableaux prepared by the departments of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Youth Services, Social Welfare, Health, Energy, Horticulture, Forests, Women and Child Development, Watershed Development, Zilla Panchayat Engineering, Urban Development and Transport were displayed on the occasion.
