Congress thanks Sonia, Manmohan

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Elated by the decision of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government to declare Kannada a classical language, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee on Saturday celebrated Rajyotsava at the KPCC office here for the first time.

Inaugurating the celebrations, KPCC president R.V. Deshpande thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for responding to the plea of the people of the State.

He said that Ms. Gandhi informed him a month ago during his visit to New Delhi that she had told the Prime Minister and Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Ambika Soni that Kannada should be accorded classical language status, and he was grateful to her for the gesture.

Mr. Deshpande said that the interests and welfare of the people of the State were in danger because of the policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party Government. The “anti-social activities” of Sangh Parivar elements had destroyed the peace and tranquillity in the State, he said.

The former Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council K.H. Srinivasa advised a section of the people of north Karnataka who are demanding a separate State not to pursue it. “They should realise that a unified Karnataka was established only to bring all Kannada-speaking people under one administration.”

Leader of the Opposition in the Council V.S. Ugrappa urged the State Government to take steps to get a favourable verdict from the Supreme Court on making Kannada the medium of instruction from the primary school level.
