BJP seeks debt relief for weavers

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The BJP weavers cell has urged the United Progressive Alliance government to release Rs.3,000 crore towards debt relief and rehabilitation package for the handloom weavers, on the lines of the one given to the farmers, as the weavers community was in great trouble.

Many weavers, involved in handloom and decentralised power loom weaving, had died in the last few years in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, unable to repay their debts in view of severe loss in their income, according to a resolution adopted at the weavers cell meeting here on Friday and Saturday.

The meeting wanted the Central and State governments to set up “weavers welfare and relief fund” throughout the country to help the community.

Subsidy sought

The meeting, held under the chairmanship of its convenor V. Sreeramulu, also wanted the Centre to support weavers of all types with subsidy of 20 per cent and the amount could be paid directly to the weavers account by the Central government.

BJP’s former president M. Venkiah Naidu, general secretary Ram Lalji and headquarters in charge Shyam Jajuji addressed the meeting.
