Fishermen oppose move to shift them

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: Fishermen belonging to Sri Polamamba Fish Vendors Welfare Association have opposed the bid to prevent them from selling fish on Sundays on the Jail Road.

At a press conference here on Saturday, they alleged said that at the behest of local MLA, there was an attempt to shift them. They said they were allowed by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation to sell fish in the area after they were evicted from a narrow lane opposite Asilametta petrol bunk.

Association president K. Venkateswara Rao, AP Matsakaryula Sangham State vice-president Y. Nandanna and others said Mukesh Kumar Meena, GVMC Commissioner, who was transferred recently, had also promised to grant funds for construction of ‘makeshift’ sheds at the area under question during an official visit to the spot.

They said there were rumours that most of the fish vendors were from outside the district and they were trying to put up permanent structures at the site with the support of Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao.

Mr. Venkateswara Rao strongly condemned the campaign against the fish vendors.
