News of classical language status to Kannada added fervour to the spirit of the festivities

BANGALORE: Colourful processions and jathas were organised in the city on Saturday by various organisations to mark Kannada Rajyotsava.

The news of Kannada being accorded classical language status on the eve of Kannada Rajyotsava added fervour to the spirit of the festivities.

Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha led by its president Vatal Nagaraj celebrated the end of a successful “Kannada Ulisi” (save Kannada) campaign. Embarking upon the next “Save Karnataka” campaign, paksha activists took out a procession from Mysore Bank Circle to the Vidhana Soudha. “This year’s celebrations were centred around unification of Kannadigas and fight for the rights of Horanadu Kannadigas. “People in Mysore, Uttara Kannada and Hyderabad-Karnataka ought to unite under one banner,” Mr. Nagaraj told The Hindu.

Campaign for Sexual Minorities and Sex workers Rights organised a health camp to mark the occasion. Nearly 600 people, including children, from slums in Kamalanagar, Kasturinagar and surrounding areas attended the camp. Kannada Geleyara Balaga garlanded the statues of B.M. Shreekantaiah at South End Circle, Kuvempu at Kuvempunagar and H. Narasimhaiah at Basavanagudi. A “Kannada meet” was organised in which researcher M. Chidanandamurthy and scientist T.R. Ananthram participated. Akhila Karnataka Catholic Kraistara Sangha celebrated Rajyotsava on the premises of Vanachinappa church in Vishwanathanagenahalli. The sangha honoured 11 persons for their contribution to Kannada. Karnataka Veerashaiva Vidhyabhivrudhi Samsthe organised a flag-hoisting ceremony at Basaveshwara hostel. Mallikarjunadeva, chairman of Sarpabhushana Shivayogi Math; V. Sommanna, former Minister, and G.S. Siddalingaiah, former president of Kannada Sahitya Parishat participated.
