KOCHI: A total of 155 Clean Kerala Businesses have been established across the State under the Kudumbasree poverty eradication mission. These businesses, engaged in processing solid waste, are operating under 18 urban local bodies. There around 40 of these solid waste processing units, entirely run by women, operating in various parts of Ernakulam district. The Kudumbasree women have filled a gap in the solid waste management scene in Kerala without creating any additional expenditure for the urban local bodies in the State. The spreading venture has the potential to generate around 30,000 jobs for women in the 58 urban local bodies in the State. There are 1,895 wards in the 58 urban local bodies. If there is a waste collection group of 10 women each in each of these wards, a total of 1,895 units can be established providing employment to 18,950 women. In addition, says a Kudumbasree mission estimate, about 10,000 women can be employed in turning the degradable waste into vermin compost. The solid waste collection enterprises initiated by the Kudumbasree mission is also a livelihood earner for the women with the units charging Rs. 30 a month from each household. The women entrepreneurs earn between 3,000 and Rs 5,000 a month. It is estimated that between 2,800 and 3,000 tonnes of waste is generated in the State a day. Of this, only 50 per cent is collected and properly disposed of.
