VISAKHAPATNAM: Chairman of the Railway Board Kalyan Coomar Jena on Saturday said allocation of funds for the Waltair division had been increased to Rs.371 crores from last year’s Rs.245 crores and various developmental projects undertaken in this division had been progressing well.

For improving passenger amenities, Rs.30 crores had been set apart and of this, Rs.9 crores would be spent for the Visakhapatnam station.

He said the gauge conversion work between Naupada-Guupur would be completed by March next.

The work on the Rs.168-crore third line between Vizianagaram and Kottavalasa, scheduled to be completed by 2011, was also progressing well.

The fourth line between Kottavalasa and Simhachalam had also been sanctioned and work was under progress. The East Coast Railway had been doing good work and stood first in the country.

He said the Indian Railways proposed to develop five stations in each division into model stations and in the first phase Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Rayagada and Duvvada are included in this scheme. Simhachalam, Bobbilli, Parvathipuram, Kottavalasa, Ponduru and other stations would be taken up in the second and third phases, he said. On the demands for creation of a separate zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters, the Chairman said that these were all demands of political leaders and “ I don’t want to react to these here”. On the issue of some important trains not touching Visakhapatnam for want of adequate number of platforms, Mr. Jena said that this issue had been brought to his notice and now that the number of platforms had increased, he would look into it.

Later, Mr. Jena along with the General Manager of ECoR A.K. Goyal, Divisional Railway Manager D. Kamilla and Senior DCM Satya Kumar, went round the station and inspected passenger amenities.
