Shrinking expanse: The human chain organised for the conservation of the Vellayani Lake on Saturday. The water body, one of the three rain-fed freshwater lakes in Kerala, was spread over 750 hectares in 1926. Now, thanks to illegal sand-mining and large-scale encroachments, the lake measures less than 450 hectares. Till 1953, the lake, replenished by 64 rivulets, was exclusively used to grow lotus flowers for Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
