Close fight at Kochi regional round

KOCHI: In a closely-fought contest that lasted 30 questions and a tie-break, Safeer Bawa A.S. and Ravikrishnan Rajeev, Class IX students from Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya, Kakkanad, emerged winners at the Kochi regional round of the ninth edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz competition held at A.J. Hall here on Saturday. Vivek Venugopal and Ravi Shankar M., representing Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya, Thrikkakkara, were the runners-up, while Vivek R. and Goutham Venkatesh from MES Udyogamandal, Eloor, emerged the second runners-up.

Avinash Pai and Ravishanker R., of Vidyodaya, Thevakkal; M. Ashwath, and Rushab Menon of Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara; and Divij Santhosh and Giridhar A.K. from Vidyodaya, Thevakkal, were the rest of the six teams in the finals. Rear Admiral Sunil Lamba, Chief of Staff, Headquarters, Southern Naval Command, who was the chief guest at the function, gave away the prizes. The winners will now represent the region in the national finals to be held in Visakhapatnam on November 13 to compete for the trophy which was last won by a team from the city in 2005. Teams from Kochi have been crowned champions twice in the past.

The six teams for the finals of the regional round were selected based on a written preliminary of 25 questions.

At the end of the full quota of 30 questions in the final round, Bhavan’s Adarsha Vidyalaya and Bhavan’s Varuna Vidyalaya were tied at 55 points each. Eventually, the winner was decided by a tie-breaker question.

The first-prize winners walked away with a bagful of prizes including Rs.8,000 in cash, DVD players and a bounty of gift hampers from various sponsors.

Michelle Reginald and Nikita Abraham of the Gregorian Public School named their team ‘Sharp Shooters’ and won the first prize for best team name. Nandagopal V. and Devakrishnan M. of Jyothi Nivas School, Aluva, won the second prize for naming their team ‘Quiz Wizards of Cochin.’ Vishnu V. and Juan John of Hari Sri Vidhya Nidhi School, Thrissur, and Shilpa Joy and Anagha Menon of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Irinjalakkuda, won the first and second prizes for the best outstation teams.

The contest is presented by Extramarks.com and managed by Quizwallahs. The associate sponsors of the event are DC Books Mango, Cheetos and Kissan Amaze. The beverage sponsor is Real. The national sponsors of the quiz are State Bank of Travancore, Penguin, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Reynolds, Firefox, Lotte Caramilk and Cycle Agarbathis.

The regional sponsors of the event are CDC Cashews, Samsung and Club Mahindra Holidays. The Young World quiz is part of The Hindu-Newspaper in Education initiative.
