Yasin Malik held

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: Protests rocked the Maisuma locality here on Saturday after news of the government slapping the Public Safety Act (PSA) on Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik spread.

A group of youths took to the streets, shouting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans and forcing shopkeepers to down the shutters. As police reached the spot, the youth threw stones and the police used teargas shells to disperse them. The pitched battle continued for some time. Though officials were tightlipped, informed sources confirmed that Mr. Malik was booked under the PSA for two years. He has been shifted to the District Jail, Jammu.

On Friday, Mr. Malik was shifted to hospital for a medical check-up but authorities later decided to book him and send him outside Kashmir. Both he and Jamiat-e-Ahlahadees chief Showkat Shah were arrested last month during an anti-election campaign in the Hajin area and lodged in the Sumbal police station.

Mr. Shah has been admitted to the intensive care unit of the S. K. Institute of Medical Sciences here.

The sources said Ghulam Nabi Sumji, member of the Syed Ali Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference was also booked under the PSA for two years and being sent to the Jammu jail.
