The award was presented to him at a function at India House here chaired by Manek S. Dalal Chairman of the Foundation. India’s High Commissioner to the U.K. Shiv Shankar Mukherjee was the guest of honour. Krishnan Kutty Menon, secretary of the Foundation, said Mr Justice Balakrishnan was chosen for the award for “consistently upholding the rights and interests of the common people” and “fighting fearlessly and tirelessly against the corruption endemic in the Indian judicial system.” The Foundation campaigns for eradication of illiteracy and promotion of Indian art and culture.
