Students from Germany interacting with visually challenged children during Nayana-2008 in Bangalore on Sunday. — Bangalore: Nayana-2008, a State-level cultural festival was organised by the Visually-Impaired People’s Fellowship (VIPF) on Sunday at the Mitralaya Girls High School, Bangalore. The event was put together in order to create a platform for visually challenged students to display their talent. M.S. Christopher, general secretary, VIPF, said, “The Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995, provides equal opportunity and protection of rights for the differently-abled. Lack of awareness, combined with improper implementation of the Act, has led us to appeal to the Government to ensure the security of all such people.” “Visually challenged youth have a lot of talent, but it must be given a fair chance to surface. Such platforms are not just for the visually challenged, but for people with any form of disability,” he said. Oath administeredI. Thomas, president of the International Cultural Alliance, led the audience with an oath to pledging one’s eyes to those in need. Nayana-2008 saw a lot of talent with a variety of performances such as group singing, folk dance, and mimicry. Ronja Bondzio and Michaela Fliesser, working with Enable India, an NGO said, “these performances show what visually challenged people are capable of, making it important to recognise their needs and provide aid for their betterment.”
