Innovation: P. Shriram explains the working of the electricity-generating speed breaker. ERODE: P. Shriram, a third year mechanical engineering student of K.S. Rangasamy College of Technology, Tiruchengode, and his friends have come up with an electricity generating speed breaker. The speed breaker, for which the students won a prize at the Jawaharlal Nehru Technical University, Kadapa, is made of rubber or of any other material that will transfer the vibration of a vehicle passing over. Beneath the speed breaker is a device, with which a bent surface at the top receives the vibration transferred. The device’s surface in turn transfers the vibration to vertical iron rods connected to a spring. And, at the end of the spring is a tyre, which rubs against a dynamo’s surface to produce electricity. Mr. Shriram says the electricity the dynamo generates can be stored in a battery and used to light street lights. The student explains that the concept behind the project is simple that of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. He adds that the device has to be fine tuned yet. His classmates V. Sridhar and A.M. Nirmal Kumar and friend K. Nagasubramanian of Krishna College of Engineering joined him in the project.
