Discovery of fullerene

This is has reference to the news item (The Hindu -Oct. 24) on the first discovery of fullerene from India in Mangampet barytes mines. Large deposits of fullerene-bearing shungitic rocks have been discovered in Russia in 1992, Kazakhstan in 2002 and Mangampet in 2006. Russia and Kazakhstan have popularised eco-friendly and cost effective use of shungite in medicine, water purification, waste water treatment, soil fertility.

It would be worthwhile for Andhra Pradesh to emulate the same for the effective use of Mangampet shungitic deposits.

Check on prices

In the wake of world economic crises, lot of assurances came forth, but the common man cannot stomach such string of reassurances. They experience in the market the mortifying price current. Green peas cost Rs. 100 a kg. tomato Rs. 50, beans Rs. 80 and so on. It is time the authorities stopped mouthing platitudes and initiated measure to hold the price line.

Skyrocketing prices

The prices of vegetables have skyrocketed making the common man’s life miserable. For the past six months the prices of rice and vegetables have been steadily increasing. Though time and again the government announced that the price rise would be put on hold, nothing has been done. Government should initiate strong measures against hoarders and also stop export of rice to the other states to bring down the prices to some extent.

Objectionable questions

Some television anchors pose objectionable questions to the youth in the interactive programmes which mislead the young minds.

Questions like do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend--- at least-- one sounds very silly.

The content of television programmes calls for strict surveillance.

A statutory body should be established to keep a check on such content
