Letters to the Editor
This refers to the hate politics of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena targeting north Indians in the State. It was shocking to learn that Dharamdeo Rai, a 25-year-old worker, could not complete his journey to his native town in Uttar Pradesh from Mumbai as he was killed by fellow travellers on a suburban train. It appears that it is not safe to travel even from one State to another within India. Inter-State hatred has grown to an alarming level. After six decades of winning freedom from a colonial power, we are in a pitiable state. S.A. Alagarsamy, Chennai Successive governments at the Centre and in Maharashtra have been turning a blind eye to the criminal activities of Bal Thackeray and his clan. The report of the Justice Srikrishna Commission was conveniently overlooked. The violent anti-minority attitude is now manifesting itself in the form of regional chauvinism. It only proves that religion doesn’t unite people. Religious fundamentalism should not be mistaken for nationalism. Elizabeth Varghese, Kochi A well-planned, calculated and organised divisive activity has been on for several years in Maharashtra. It has been at its peak for at least one year. But no party has done anything about it, and the people are at the receiving end. The media are the last hope of the citizens. T.K. Hariharan, Mysore
