Bangalore: Anil Kumble’s retirement evoked sadness and awe among cricketers cutting across eras in his hometown. B.S. Chandrashekar: “It is a sad and emotional moment. It is a big loss for the team. He was such a consistent bowler and a proven match-winner.” Brijesh Patel: “It was a surprise but Anil must have wanted to go out on a high. He is the stuff of legend. “May be the fact that a young bowler is emerging must have also goaded him into the decision. He was always a team man and it was typical of him.” Javagal Srinath: “It is hard to imagine an Indian Test side without Anil. I just hope someone will emerge quickly and step into his big shoes.” Sunil Joshi: “He was respected in every quarter and despite all his achievements he stayed humble. It was a privilege to share the dressing room with him.” Vijay Bharadwaj: “Sad to know that he retired and proud to know that he achieved so much. No player can ever come close to him in terms of commitment and discipline. ” Dodda Ganesh: “After G.R. Viswanath, Anil was the greatest cricketer to have played for Karnataka and India. He was like an elder brother to us and no other cricketer commanded the respect that Anil did.” Sujith Somasundar: “Anil was a champion and I also feel proud that he is from our State. His commitment was phenomenal and his records speak for themselves. It is sad but all good things come to an end, it’s inevitable.”
