Disk replacement surgery safe: experts

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: Taking up risk-free disk replacement surgery of the spine is now an acceptable and safe option for scores of patients struggling with chronic back pain, spinal surgeons of Global Hospitals said. In a media meet on Saturday, the surgeons informed that a minimally invasive spine surgery, with high success rate, has been introduced in the hospital. To implement and transfer this technology to Global Hospital, German spinal surgeon Dr. Jaurge Franke is in city to attend a Continuing Medical Education session and conduct spinal surgery in the hospital.

“Thanks to modern technology, we can conduct this surgery with minimal loss of muscle and blood. It involves replacing the spinal disc with an artificial one. This surgery is done as a last resort on patients for whom all other preventive options have been employed and failed,” said Dr. Franke.

The total expenditure for such surgery would cost Rs. 2 lakh. “There is a perception that patients undergoing spinal surgeries end up in a wheel chair. Thanks to this new surgery, patients can start their normal life in a matter of weeks,” said consultant orthopaedic and spinal surgeon of Global Hospitals Dr. G.P.V. Subbaiah.
