This is the fourth phase of the mass marriage programme There is proposal to organise it outside the State VISAKHAPATNAM: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) performed marriage of 357 couples in the city and various parts of the district on Sunday under the Kalyanamasthu programme – the marriage of people from poor and downtrodden families – amid Vedic hymns and presented them tickets for darshan of Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala. ‘Muhurtham’The marriages were performed simultaneously between 10.55 a.m. and 11.10 a.m. – an auspicious time. The ‘muhurtham’ fell on ‘Karthika Sudha Panchami’ with ‘Moola’ star on ‘Dhanurlagnam’. This is the fourth phase of the mass marriage programme conducted by the TTD in the district. Sixty friends and relatives of each couple were allowed to take part in a grand wedding feast hosted by the TTD. All the couples were given ‘mangalasutra’, two silver toe-rings, new clothes, bracelets and other marriage material as per Hindu tradition. The priests performed ‘homam’ and other rituals amid chanting of mantras. VVIPs who graced the occasion included TTD trust board member M. Anjaiah, Mayor Pulusu Janardhana Rao, MLC R. Ratnakumari, Joint Collector Satyanarayana Reddy, Revenue Development Officer D. Venkata Reddy, corporator Pattabhi, TTD zonal officer K. Harnath Reddy and district in-charge officer S. Jayachandra at the main function conducted at the TTD Kalyanamandapam, MVP Colony. The programme was also conducted separately at Turner’s Choultry, Simhachalam, Bhimili, Chodavaram, Paderu, Narsipatnam, Anakapalle, Yelamanchili, Payakaraopeta, Chintapalle, Parawada and Madugula. Mr. Anjaiah said the response to the programme was overwhelming among the tribals. He said there were proposals to perform Kalyanamasthu outside the State. In all, 62 tribals tied the knots at Paderu, 46 at Chintapalle and 22 at Madugula. The response to the earlier rounds of the programme was also very good. Some 378 couples’ marriage from all communities was solemnised at the programme conducted at various places in the district on February 22, 2007, 406 at the second phase on August 26, 2007, and 435 at the third phase on March 9 last.
