Instances of chain smokers cutting down on the number come to light

MADURAI: The ban on smoking in public places completed one month on Sunday. While the spot fine collected across the State has crossed the Rs.4-lakh mark, there are instances of chain smokers cutting down on the number drastically and others kicking the habit, pressed by their children.

The Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2008, came into force on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanthi).

It is being enforced all over the State through the Health, Education and Police Departments.

Health Department officials reviewed the enforcement of the Tobacco Control Act at a meeting held in Chennai recently and considered means of helping habitual smokers give up the habit, a senior official of the Health Department here, who attended the meeting, told The Hindu.

The sum collected in fine from the violators amounted to Rs.4.17 lakh. The instances of the positive effect of the Act are now in circulation through the Directorate of Public Health, the nodal agency for the enforcement, which has deployed anti-tobacco squads. An engineer, who was a chain smoker, now buys only one cigarette packet and has vowed to quit in due course. A lecturer has become non-smoker, thanks to the consistent pressure from his children.

The Deputy Directors of Health Services have been asked by the Directorate of Public Health to continue with awareness and control measures, besides the fine of Rs.200.

Director of Public Health S. Elango said daily reports were received from districts, and the fine amount was deposited in the government treasury under the Health Department account.
